Whether you’re new to ceramics or looking to deepen your practice, this 6-week Introduction to Hand Building course offers a grounding exploration of clay, creativity, and cultural connection. Students will learn foundational ceramic techniques including wedging, moisture management, coil building, slab construction, pinch pots, hump molds, and surface design. In addition to the technical instruction, this class will encourage students to research and reflect on ancestral and folk-art traditions connected to their own cultural backgrounds and implant that finding into some of their pieces.

Students are encouraged to make both functional and sculptural pieces along with keeping a sketchbook for research and ideas. Students enrolled in the class receive access to weekly studio hours on Fridays for independent practice outside of class.

Taught by Damaris Swass.

As a student you:

  • Will have your own shelf in the studio to store clay, tools, and projects. The course fee includes unlimited studio clay. (Additional clays can be purchased at the studio if desired.)

  • Can bring tools or purchase them from the studio for $15 on the first day of class, and should bring aprons and towels if desired.
